The federal personal income tax returns are reported using Form 1040 and when you are not ready with the return, file for an extension request with the IRS and extend your due date. For requesting a tax extension you need to file Form 4868 and an automatic extension for 6 months could be availed.
When you need more time to prepare your federal personal tax return? form 4868 will get you the extra time to file tax returns but not the time to pay your taxes. If you use a calendar year, the regular due date of your return is April 15. Even if you are allowed an extension, you will have to pay interest on any tax not paid by the regular due date of your return.
Automatic 6 month Extension for Individuals.
If you are not able to file your return by the due date, you generally can get an automatic 6-month extension of time to file (but not of time to pay). To get this automatic extension, you must file Form 4868 use IRS Authorized e-file (electronic filing).
