Extra Time to File Doesn’t Mean Extra Time to Pay, April 17 is the last date and use ExtensionTax.com

An extension will give you extra time to file your return, but any tax is still due by the original deadline. An extension can help reduce penalties, but any outstanding balance will still be charged a late payment penalty (0.5 percent per month) and interest (right now at 3 percent annually).

Individual taxpayers can file an extension using Form 4868. Extensions can also be filed online, which has the benefit that you’ll receive a confirmation code from the IRS notifying you that your extension was received. Businesses request an extension using Form 7004.

Note well: While an extension gives you extra time to file your return, an extension does not give you extra time to pay your tax.

Payments are still due by April 17, 2018 for the year 2017. But an extension can help reduce your penalties if you cannot afford to pay in full by the deadline.

Form 8868–Application for Extension of Time To File an Exempt Organization Return

Any organisation that is registered with the IRS as an exempt organization, files Form 8868 to request an automatic 6-month extension of time to file its return.

Form 8868 is the tax extension application used by charities, nonprofit groups, and other tax-exempt organizations to receive an automatic 6-month extension on their Form 990. This form 8868 will automatically grant you the 6 months extension, you don’t have to provide the IRS a valid reason for needing an extension. Simply complete the IRS Form 8868 before the May 15th deadline.

Form 990, 990-EZ, or 990-PF must be filed by the 15th day of the 5th month after the end of your organization’s accounting period. Thus, for a calendar year taxpayer, Form 990, 990-EZ, or 990-PF is due May 15 of the following year.

Use Form 8868 to request an automatic 6-month extension of time to file Form 990, 990-EZ, or 990-PF.

Note: The 990-N due date cannot be extended, but there is no penalty for submitting it late unless it’s the third (and only) year.

What’s New in Form 8868?

There is now an automatic 6-month extension of time to file instead of the previous 3-month automatic extension and subsequent request for an additional 3-month extension. The form and instructions have been revised accordingly.

If an organization has not filed the required Form 990 series for three consecutive years, and if the due date (or extended due date) of the third year’s filing has passed, the tax-exempt status will be revoked to the original filing date. If you have received an approved extension from the IRS for filing your return, and have not filed your return with the IRS for 3 years (including during the approved extension period), please go to Automatic Revocation of Exemption at http://www.irs.gov/charities-nonprofits/automatic-revocation-ofexemption for details on revocation and reinstatement for an exempt organization.
